A diamond has certain qualifications that are known as the “4c’s.” Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Color make up these qualifications. If you compare these qualifications between different stones than you can compare values. I would suggest when comparing diamonds you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. For instance a 1.00ct G color SI1 clarity diamond that is GIA certified and then comparing the price of that between a few different stores.
